Do You Give Good Gifts?
Have you ever received a gift that you didn’t ask for but you are thankful for nonetheless? I always chuckle when I read scriptures like Luke 11:11 which says, "Which of you fathers, if your son asks for a fish, will give him a snake instead?” Even though I understand the context of the verse as it is talking about prayer and how much our heavenly father loves us and will give us good gifts, I can’t help but think of my own father and the gift I got one Christmas as a kid. I don’t remember asking my dad for a tarantula, actually I think it probably wasn’t anywhere near my Christmas list but my dad knew I loved animals and so next to my toy crossbow was a mini terrarium with a bow and a large hairy spider in it. I have to admit I was terrified of the tarantula but I wanted to make my dad proud and take care of my newly acquired arachnid friend.
Scripture says that even though we are evil we still know how to give good gifts and it encourages us to seek our heavenly Father because He will give us abundantly more than we even ask. God has given us the greatest gift in all of humanity by sending His son, Jesus Christ, to Earth for our salvation. My father got me the tarantula out of the goodness of his heart and that to him was a good gift. There was no malice involved and yet it wasn’t exactly what I wanted, but as we seek the Lord He will give us what we truly desire as we confide in him and submit to His will. Once we align ourselves with the God and determine ourselves to seek Him and His righteousness we will be astounded at the “good gifts” our heavenly father bestows on us! Do you give good gifts?
